At Beam, you get to do work that really matters. We’re solving the world’s toughest social problems. And we’re growing fast 🚀
It’s not easy. Nothing worth doing ever is. But we take care of everyone who works here with everything from coaching to personal budgets and pay highly competitively.
You’ll be joining a company that’s having a huge impact on people’s lives with a culture where you can be yourself, have fun and progress rapidly.
About the role
The UK has seen 4 unprecedented refugee challenges emerge over the last 3 years; the war in the Ukraine, the withdrawal of British involvement in Afghanistan, the support of political refugees from Hong Kong, and a dramatic increase in the number of people crossing the channel. All of this has resulted in large numbers of asylum seekers waiting in Home Office hotels for many months, and even years, before receiving their asylum decision.
We are looking for an engaging and enthusiastic teacher who will deliver instructive and inspiring English lessons to support the many asylum seekers looking to settle and start a new life in the UK. You’ll be supporting a group of people based in a hotel in London to improve their English in preparation for receiving a decision, giving them the best chance of settling successfully in the UK.
This is a full-time (9am-6pm Mon-Fri), fixed term employment contract (UK based) for 4 months initially, with the possibility of an extension. The role will require initial learner assessments and then the delivery of 2 simultaneous in person courses starting in May in South London, with one class attending morning lessons and one attending afternoon lessons.
You’ll be
Delivering an incredible course, helping learners make the most of their time waiting for an asylum decision by rapidly improving their English
Working cross-functionally with the rest of the Beam team to iterate and improve this course for future use
You are
Comfortable delivering in person training in an engaging and effective way
Excited about the possibilities of technology transforming the lives of some of society’s most disadvantaged people
Highly organised and renowned for your incredible attention to detail
Self-starting and enthusiastic about operational tasks: keen to improve processes and suggest new ways of doing things
You’ll need
Experience delivering English training
Preferable: a CELTA qualification but if not a TEFL or TESOL qualification
Preferable: experience working with refugees before, including detailed knowledge of the challenges people experience
Preferable: lived experience of being a refugee in the UK
Preferable: already have a DBS check
What great looks like
You’ll deliver an exceptional course to our first cohort of asylum seekers
You’ll be constantly improving the course, both throughout delivery and after the first cohort have finished
Our commissioners will be impressed by the learner feedback and outcomes
You will have co-developed a delivery model that can be replicated across different cohorts of asylum seekers and refugees
